02 Mar Archeologists Discover a Home at Harriet Tubman’s Birthplace
The Commercial family celebrates a Black History hero from right here in Maryland. Harriet Tubman was born Araminta Ross in Dorchester County on the Eastern Shore. After freeing herself in 1849, she returned an estimated 13 times to free over 70 enslaved people.
On Thompson Farm, Harriet Tubman’s birthplace, archeologists discovered a home where enslaved people lived. Its brick foundation was hidden beneath layers of soil. Hundreds of artifacts were found in the house foundation, including a West African spirit cache. The enslaved would have placed it in front of their fireplace to keep evil spirits away.
Let’s ensure that Harriet Tubman’s spirit lives on in all of us!
