Commercial Construction is Chosen For Restoration of the Historic Upton Mansion

Commercial Group is honored to lead the restoration of Baltimore’s historic Upton Mansion! In partnership with Afro Charities, we are embarking on an intensive restoration to transform the mansion into a modern home for the Afro Archives and a vibrant community hub.

First built in 1838 as a private residence, the mansion would become home to Baltimore’s first radio station and a thriving center for musical arts. This iconic structure has remained vacant and in need of care since 2006.

From Afro Charities’ website regarding the restoration:

“Our project includes the restoration of the historic mansion and carriage house, the construction of an annex at the rear of the property, and extensive site work on the grounds. The redeveloped property will include offices for Afro Charities, the AFRO American Newspapers (our anchor tenant), and other third-party tenants; state of the art archival storage; a research room; archival processing and digitization labs; a new gallery; and beautiful grounds, designed for indoor/outdoor events.”

Once complete, the campus will be ADA accessible for the first time in its nearly 200-year history, and will become an important economic anchor in a neighborhood that has suffered from generations of disinvestment.”

Together, we’re preserving its legacy and ensuring it continues to inspire future generations.

Now for our team, ring that victory bell!
